Culture

Prior to a recent speaking engagement about organizational culture, I did my best to come up with my own definition after being unsatisfied with all of the rather dictionary-like ones I had seen. This is what I came up with - the consistent patterns in how people treat each other. What do you think? To me, this is what it comes down to and it starts with leadership.

(Pro)Crastinating

Are you a “pro” at procrastinating certain tasks? You know the ones. You continually kick them down the road and end up waiting until the last minute. There is no single perfect solution. Clear your desk, close any unnecessary tabs, turn notifications off, set a timer for 30 minutes and just get started. You know you will feel better once you do.

Wins

At the end of each day, I like to start setting my priorities for the following day. But, this is not where my day ends. My final task is to jot down some of my wins and accomplishments for the day. It is such a great way to wrap things up and sends me into the evening with a more relaxed brain.

Just Be Easy to Work With

Sahil Bloom, one of my favorite writers, said, “Just be easy to work with. Show up on time. Do what you said you'd do. Bring solutions, not problems. Never create drama. Be responsive. Be emotionally consistent. Be kind. People will always want to support someone who just makes their life easier.”

Stop…

  • Complaining - do something about it or accept it.

  • Being unreliable.

  • Overreacting.

  • Playing it safe.

  • Allowing others to dictate your mood.

  • Gossiping.

  • Scrolling social media.

  • Procrastinating (see above).

  • Not getting enough sleep.

  • Being disorganized. Not taking care of your mental and physical health.

Quote of the Week

“As a rule of thumb, never think twice about making investments in yourself.”

— Sahil Bloom

Resource of the Week

Generally speaking, I do not listen to podcasts on a regular basis but this is one I check out a few times a month. Adam is a unique thinker and has authored a number of popular books such as Think Again and Hidden Potential. There is a catalog of previous episodes that are all thought-provoking and most are less than 45 minutes long. I particularly love Adam’s take on meetings in Season 6 Episode 1. He is also collaborating on a number of things with Brené Brown, one of my favorite leadership authors.

That’s it for this week!
