A Sense of Urgency

Yes, there is such a thing as being calm while still exhibiting a sense of urgency. It means recognizing the importance of the present moment in accomplishing a goal without letting anxiety dictate our pace or allowing distractions to get in the way. We can pair intense focus with emotional steadiness.

Garbage In, Garbage Out

This phrase originated in the early days of computer science and it meant that junk input produces junk output. You can apply this concept to your output. What are you reading, what social media accounts are you following, what foods are you nourishing your body and mind with? You cannot expect great output if you are taking in junk, either mentally or physically.

Three Year Vision

We talk a lot about our daily and weekly goals and priorities, but when was the last time you slowed down enough to thoughtfully reflect on some longer-term goals and dreams? What do you want your personal and professional life to look like three years from now? I urge you to find a few moments to think about this and to write down some actionable commitments. Go big.

The Power of (Small) Moments

The Power of Moments is a book by Dan and Chip Heath that encourages us to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. This summer I have been training for a bucket-list outdoor trip, meaning I am often wandering the neighborhood with 30 pounds in my backpack and my phone at home. I have purposefully tried to observe more birds, to hear children playing, to say more hellos to neighbors, and to notice the clouds. The big moments in life are easy to recognize but sometimes few and far between. Don’t miss the small moments.

Your Circle

Most of us have heard the saying that suggests we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Have you thought about this as it applies to your work and personal life? If you want to be innovative, surround yourself with bold thinkers. If you want to be extraordinary, quit hanging around with status-quo people. If you want to set and accomplish big goals, hang around with others who are doing the same. Your growth is often capped or accelerated based upon who you are spending time with.

Quote of the Week

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

– Arthur Ashe
