You Are Not Stuck
You are allowed to…decline the invitation, not answer the email/text right away, change your mind, say “I don’t know,” take a day off and do nothing, change jobs, change locations, stop solving problems that others should, disagree, protect your energy, celebrate the wins, guard your evenings and weekends, start a new hobby, take a class, enjoy a phone-free walk at lunch, and ask for help.
The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow
A bad day doesn't require an all-night tailspin. Keeping your perspective is a skill that you can develop and get better at. Temporary setbacks in work and life are not permanent damage. There is a difference between caring about something and carrying it longer than necessary.
Your Decisions, Our Decisions, My Decisions
When I work with new leaders, I challenge them to be sure their teams know that the majority of day-to-day decisions are their own, some decisions are shared, and lastly, some decisions are solely those of the leader. Well-meaning new leaders can fall into patterns of micromanagement or consensus, either trying to make every decision themselves or trying to get everyone to agree on everything. Neither are effective.
Strong Words
From Brad Stulberg… “We are at a point in history—not nearing it, but here—where everyone is going to have to decide if they are content to numb themselves with an endless stream of fentanyl-like digital slop or if they are going to fight for their humanity and touch grass and challenge themselves and create and contribute and love. Enough with half-assed, highly-automated content. Enough with half-assed, highly-automated effort. Enough with half-assed, highly-automated lives. Do not outsource your life to machines. Do not prioritize ease and convenience over meaningful effort. Nobody wants their gravestone to read: ‘He/She was efficient.’ Live fully. Care deeply. Be the counterculture.”
Inspiration
Do your words and actions inspire others? I am not talking about “standing on a mountaintop spouting speeches while a brisk wind blows through your hair” sort of inspiration. Leadership is messier and involves many less dramatic moments of inspiration. Offering sincere praise, being a mentor, granting trust, saying thank you, giving direct but kind feedback, being a thoughtful listener, guarding your team’s time, staying calm in times of crisis, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being fully prepared for meetings are all ways to inspire others.
Quote of the Week
"If you have more than three priorities, you don’t have any.”
— Jim Collins
Book of the Week
I just purchased this book a few days ago on the recommendation of a client and am already finding it useful. Leadership and Self-Deception is told in a “story style” similar to the very popular book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. It outlines a paradigm shifting approach to how we view solving problems associated with leadership. This edition also includes a discussion guide for use as part of a book study.
That’s it for this week!
